Monsters and Me- 14th Apr, 3:00-4:30pm

On Saturday, 14 April, Homerton College will discuss what it means to be human in the age of artificial intelligence, 200 years after Frankenstein asked a similar question. This discussion will feature Professor Geoff Ward (renowned literary critic, author, and Principal of Homerton College) and Dr Beth Singler (Research Associate, Faraday Institute for Science and Religion, and Junior Research Fellow at Homerton College), and will be chaired by Dr Louise Joy (Fellow and Director of Studies in English, Homerton College). The event will be held in the Auditorium at Homerton College, 3.00pm-4.30pm. Attendance is free but booking is required: https://homerton250.org/events/monsters-and-me/. This event is part of Homerton College’s 250th anniversary celebrations.

St Edmund’s Art Festival

Some students at Eddies are organising an art festival at St. Edmund’s College called “Ars et Mundus” (English “Art and World”). The festival will take place on the 5th of May and showcase visual art (paintings, photographs, videos), live music performances and the reading of literary pieces (poetry and short stories). An art magazine, including all presented material, will be also launched at the festival. Food and wine will be provided.

Submissions are accepted from all Cambridge University students and are now open

They are looking for various art forms of any scale, including but not limited to oil on canvas, photography (digital and analogic), video, sculpture, and works utilising mixed-media. The theme festival is “Identity and Memory”.

They are also looking for people to play music or recite poetry, however, if you are not comfortable reciting or performing, they also accept written material submissions which can either be exhibited or published in the magazine. Music can be performed either individually or in a band and can be any type of music. Music can also be pre-recorded as video or mp3 files.

The deadline is Friday 20th April, midnight. No submissions limit!

Annual Graduate T20 Cricket League 

Currently there are only four colleges actively participating (Hughes, Darwin, Queens’ and Jesus), and the organisers are looking for any fresh interest before the season starts in May.  Colleges can enter a full team or if there are insufficient numbers, join with another college to form an amalgamated team.  

* The MCR cricket league is friendly, mixed, and aimed at a novice skill level

* All games are Twenty20 format and typically played on weekday afternoons throughout May and June

* The league is targeted at graduates (in contrast to the JCR cricket cuppers) but mature students and fellows are also welcome

 The Brilliant Club

Through working as a PhD tutor with The Brilliant Club, you will:

• Join a community of over 1000 researchers working to make access to university fair for school pupils from underrepresented backgrounds
• Develop teaching experience through small group tutorial delivery
• Receive high-quality training and support
• Enhance your employability skills
• Disseminate your research to a unique, non-expert audience in the local community
• Be paid £500 per placement
•  Watch a short video of current PhD tutors talking about their experience

We would greatly encourage you to find out more about the charity and what it offers both pupils who take part in the programme and you as PhD tutors, on The Brilliant Club’s website.

We will be having an Information Event on Mon 21 May in Mill Lane Lecture Theatre 1 at the University of Cambridge so do come along to find out a little more about the work you too could be involved in!

There will be an Assessment Centre at the University of Cambridge on 26 June (venue TBC) so please make sure you apply at least two weeks beforehand. Should you wish to apply now, you can do so here.

Outreach at Bellerbys College Cambridge

Located beside the Botanic Garden, Bellerbys College Cambridge is a small international college for students aged 14+ with a specialisation in STEM subjects. Students here come from all over the world (they have around 250 students and 50 nationalities), and most go on to study at high-ranking UK Universities.

They are looking for enthusiastic researchers who would be willing to share some aspect of their work with their students. If you feel that you could present your work, in a way that can be understood by their students, and ideally with some interactive element (an activity/a demonstration/something to show), although this is not a necessity; please get in touch!

The time slot would be on a weekday, during term time (this academic year or next) from 12:25-13:10. The school would pay £100 and provide lunch.

Lovvol

Volunteering / internship programmes in China and Mongolia. The programmes completely FREE, and selected student applicants get free training and certification as well as free food, accommodation, excursions and even Mandarin or Kung Fu lessons during the programme in China. This year they will be visiting Shanghai, Beijing, Ulaanbaatar, Xiamen, Shenzhen and many more!

Study Participants Wanted

Dutch – English bilinguals wanted for a language study – £20

The study will use EEG (electroencephalography) to record brain activity while participants listen to simple stories. You will be reimbursed £10/hour for your time, plus travel expenses (£2 if you travel from Cambridge, £2.50 if you travel from outside). This study will recruit EARLY BILINGUALS.

Eligible volunteers should:

1.   Be a DUTCH – ENGLISH balanced bilingual
2.   DUTCH as your native language (L1) and ENGLISH as your second language (L2)
3.   Started learning English (L2) before age 6
4.   Aged between 18-45 years
5.   Be right handed
6.   Have no hearing problems

If you decide to participate, they will send you a short language questionnaire to complete before booking you a slot. The experiment will last approximately two hours (at least £20).
