Cambridge Development Initiative- 23rd November 7pm

Cambridge Development Initiative (CDI) is a student-run charity doing community-based development work in Tanzania.
We would like to invite you and your department to join us for the Michaelmas launch of Cambridge Development Initiative (http://www.cambridgedevelopment.org) followed by a panel discussion on topics of international development. Cambridge Development Initiative (CDI) is a student-run charity doing community-based development work in Tanzania.

The event will be held on Thursday 23rd November, from 7:00 – 9:00 pm, in Lecture Room 4 at the Department of Engineering.

Dr. Shailaja Fennell- https://www.devstudies.cam.ac.uk/people/shailajafennell

Dr. Shailaja Fennell is a co-I on TIGR2ESS, a research programme to study how to improve crop productivity and water use, identify appropriate crops and farming practices for sustainable rural development, with funding of £ 7.8 million from the Global Challenges Fund of RCUK.

Dr. Solava Ibrahim- https://www.devstudies.cam.ac.uk/people/solavaibrahim

As a research fellow at the Chronic Poverty Research Centre (CPRC) and the Brooks World Poverty Institute (BWPI), Solava was actively engaged in drawing lessons from this 10 year DFID research consortium which explored poverty dynamics and the intergenerational transmission of poverty in developing countries.  In 2007, Solava consulted the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative to develop indicators that measure agency and empowerment.

Will has a Masters in Chemistry from the University of Bristol. Will has spent recent years working in Tanzania, Spain and South Africa running engineering projects for a sugar business, and has also spent time volunteering with an educational charity in Colombia.

Technology and New Media Research Cluster -24th November 12pm

The aim of this research cluster is to bring together academics, both staff and students, from a range of backgrounds with an interest in technology and new media, to explore and discuss ongoing research.

The research cluster will cover a wide range of research topics, including digital health and democracy, trolling, virtual reality, identity, artificial intelligence and robotics, self-tracking and labour, surveillance, speculative realism and cybernetics, and e-commerce and logistics. In addition to ethics, politics, and everyday life, discussions welcome input and suggestions deemed of interest by the membership.

The research cluster convenes fortnightly on Fridays 12-1.30pm during term

As the end of Michaelmas term and onset of holiday season gets closer, we would like to invite all students (living in college and out of college) to Saturday brunch in the Dome on November 25th. Partners and families are very welcome.
The students will have to pay for their brunch.
To ensure that all of us can sit together and go through the queue quickly, please arrive at the Dome by 11.15 am.

Study Participants Wanted

Spanish – English bilinguals wanted for a language study £10/hour

We are looking for participants to take part in a language study. The study will use EEG (electroencephalography) to record brain activity while participants listen to simple stories. You will be reimbursed £10/hour for your time, plus travel expenses (£2 if you travel from Cambridge, £2.50 if you travel from outside). This study will recruit LATE BILINGUALS.

Eligible volunteers should:

  1. Be a Spanish – English balanced bilingual
  2. Spanish as your native language (L1) and English as your second language (L2)
  3. Started learning English (L2) at or after the age of 11
  4. Aged between 18-45 years
  5. Be right handed
  6. Have no hearing problems

If you decide to participate, we will send you a short language questionnaire to complete before booking you a slot. The experiment will last approximately two hours (at least £20), and will take place at the Downing site.
